Designing With Web - Part 3: week 1

Ensure children's access to safe & sustainable transportation systems.

Group 23

Project 1: Safe Bus

Context

when? where? who? why?

Parents mostly use private vehicles to take children to school even if there are aware of the ecologic issue. They are reluctent to let their children taking public transport to go to school because they think public transportation systems are not safe enough. However, we encourage people to take sustanaible transport system in order to reduce emissions and exposure to air pollution. At the same time, parents can't always bring their children to school because they are very busy with their professional life. That's why we have to find a way to reassure the parents about public transport.

This project seeks to :

  • revitalize sustanaible transports for the safety of children,
  • promote the use of public transportation to reduce pollution,
  • guarantee the safety of the children by giving to the parents the possibility to react quickly if something wrong happen,
  • raise children's awareness of the risks of public transports,
  • help parents and children reduce their environmental impact.

  • According to the UNICEF, ensure children's access to safe & sustainable transportation systems support child to grow healthy and strong in a sustainable environment but it also enables citizenship of children.

That is why we have created Safe Bus, an apps that allows parents to follow the journey of their children to school using public transport.
    Target

    for whom?

With this application, parents can follow their children and make sure they arrive safe fully at school. We think that schools can benefit from it too, because if parents are notified when their child attend school, it could be good for their attendance at school. If their attendance at school gets better, so does their level of education. Concretely, our target is parents in the first place, but then we are sure that school and the government could be interested in our solution.
First, we think it's better and more realizable in developped countries like France but more importantly in the most unsafe city of countries, because State can afford it and we also need help from the bus company to manage that. That's why they are a major target for us, but we hope that countries less developped would want to try this system and finance it.

    Service offered

    what? how?

With our solution, we make sure that parents know that their children arrive in school. They get a notification when their child take the bus and finally when they arrive at school.
1 - We are going to use children's bus card, and inform their parents when their child is on the bus. As soon as they validate their ticket by slipping by sippling it into the validator, our campany will send a notification to their parents, so they know that their child is on the right bus.
2 - When they attend their first class, when the teacher is taking attendance, if their child is present they get notify that their child is at school, if it's not the case, they know that something went wrong : their child didn't manage to arrive at school at time, or choose not to go. If one hour later their children isn't at school, we send them a code red notification.

    Project 2: Ko-cyclids !

    Context

    when? where? who? why?

In building the mental maps, we were able to address several topics such as security issues, the ecological aspect, the notion of mutual aid, and issues of inclusiveness. All these themes are important to us and we wanted to think this project at the crossroads of these issues. This is how we want to offer you a safe, economical, ecological and social means of locomotion. Our idea translated into application does not reinvent the transportation market but brings it closer to the expectations of families. Indeed, we want to offer a service that uses existing technologies while adapting them to a specific type of need.

Let's get to the facts: we want to set up a bike sharing application for children. The principle is rather simple, shared bike trips between children from different families. Parents are the users of the application, they propose trips where they supervise their children and those of other families.

Which parent has never been in the rush to take their children to school, to the summer camp or to a birthday party? Ko-cyclids is here to help you!

The purpose of our application is to facilitate the children's journeys by sharing them with several families. It targets the different trips of the children so that they can enjoy the boom of bicycle trips as well. Several articles (Huffington Post, Le Monde, ...) testify that the bicycle is the new popular means of urban transportation: sporty, ecological and fast. We therefore find it regrettable that this boom cannot concern children. Especially since children travel for many reasons: school, going to the park, birthdays, ... While it is the children who need to travel, it is their parents who have to take them. Indeed, we cannot imagine leaving our child to travel several kilometers alone. On the other hand, if you accompany your child it becomes more interesting but now imagine that another family brings him for you!

Our application, Ko-cyclids, is primarily aimed at urban populations. Indeed, bicycles have been very much encouraged in cities for a few years now. Authorities are setting up bike paths and bonuses to buy or repair them. This is also the objective of the United Nations for sustainable development, which is the focus of our project: sustainable cities and communities. Carpooling by bicycle is also aimed at rural populations because they too need to get around to go to school or elsewhere.
More concretely, co-cycling is a safe way for your children to be more autonomous. They do not have the same reflexes. Allowing parents to have their child supervised encourages cycling, but in a more serene way. The icing on the cake is that we are creating a community of co-cyclists around this service. The same people who regularly offer trips create a group of regulars.

In short, Ko-cyclids is the transport sharing application for families !

    Target

    for whom?

Our main target is non-accompanying parents. Due to work schedule, there is a significant number of parents who are not able to acommpany their children to school or other places. We are commited to make their children's journey safer and sustainable by accompanying them from their home to these very places (mainly schools) or vice versa. As such, parents will be able to follow their children’s movement live on the map and will be notified: when their children leave, arrive or when an emergency occurs.

    Service offered

    what? how?

Our service is quite simple: an app to share bicycle trips between families. Ko-cyclids is thus a platform for carpooling between cyclists focused on children's trips: On one side, the parents propose trips they have to do with their children. On the other hand, other parents need their children to go to school, sports, ...
We will explain to you concretely how this service works, what it offers, how it is managed and how you can enjoy it.

First of all, this service works thanks to people's willingness to share their time better. Indeed, bringing children from another family is not intended to be paid on a first place. However, while the majority of accompanying persons accompany for free in order to be helpful, others may ask for a gratuity.

We are fully in line with UN Goal 11 by promoting integration.

In this way, we want to be anchored in a phenomenon that is far from new but is growing: barter. Applied to our application this gives families who take advantage of Ko-cyclids to bring their children but who will have to give this service to the community in the future. Let's imagine that during August a family A asked 3 times a family B to bring their children to the sport. Then this family A will have to propose on our platform 3 trips to accompany children. Conversely, family B will be able to take advantage of 3 trips for its children.
The principle is really basic and is based on our experience with Tricount (see references), an application of fair sharing.

To take advantage of it, it's quite simple, just download the application and create a profile. In your profile don't forget to fill in your children's profile. And let's go Ko-cyclids!
